Crane Hook Overhaul

Written by Darren Grant | 23/1/2019

This month’s blog explores an interesting journey we recently undertook to help a customer that was concerned with the constant mechanical damage that was being sustained on a hook block due to their production process.

This hook block was an auxiliary hook for another large gantry crane. During normal production, often the auxiliary hook and the main hook would collide resulting in both hook blocks sustaining damage from the collisions.

A lot of the bruising and mechanical damage was caused by the flanges and stiffeners on the outside shell in the old design.

You can see from the photos below the 90 degree gussets sustain a significant amount of damage from the larger hook block due to being hit with repetitive direct impact at a large force.

The plan was to try and eliminate the repetitive impact by making the new design more stream line to deflect as much of the impact away as possible. As a result, this allows the hook blocks to skim past each other removing the cause of previous damage.

You can see the gussets on the outer shell have been completely removed and a solid steel bevelled contact plate will now take the force of the impact and deflect it away. There are also no horizontal and parallel targets that will cause the mechanical damage on impact.
